Advancing defense technology by combining AI with drones… Nearth Lab and Funzin join hands
On January 23rd, drone startup Nearth lab announced
that it will enter into a strategic partnership with Funzin, a company
specializing in AI (artificial intelligence) and the Internet of Things (AIoT),
and expand its capabilities in the defense industry.
Nearthlab, which started with the safety inspection of wind
turbines using drones, has expanded its business into the defense sector by
launching military drones such as AiDEN and KAiDEN since last year. Funzin is a
venture company that provides AI solutions in the fields of robotics, military,
and mobile communications based on swarm operation and object recognition
technologies. Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd, which invested in shares last
year is the second-largest shareholder.
Through this collaboration, Funzin plans to develop an AI system
that analyzes the on-site environment based on the information collected by Nearth lab’s
autonomous flying drones.
In the wake of Russia-Ukraine war, drones and AI technology
have become the core of the battlefield in modern warfare. Since it is
difficult to secure sufficient data for AI to learn from, AI technology that
can perform well with limited data is essential. In addition, it is necessary
to advance on-device AI technology for the continuous mission execution of
automated devices even in situations where communication is limited or
impossible.
“By combining Nearthlab’s autonomous flying drones with
Funzin’s on-device AI technology, we will be able to build a variety of
battlefield automation power systems,” said Nearthlab CEO Jae Hyuk Choi. “We
hope that the cooperation between the two companies will contribute to the
advancement of defense technology and further strengthen the technological
competitiveness of Korea’s defense industry”
